The Magdeburg hemispheres coated with aluminium powder comprise a pair of hemispheres made of copper with rims provisioned to fit. The instrument demonstrates the power of atmospheric pressure. When the rims close with grease and the air evacuates creating vacuum inside the hemispheres making them impossible to pull apart.
