SET OF ELEMENTS FOR STUDYING HARMONIC OSCILLATIONS

Model No. HV-EXP2429

Description
SET OF ELEMENTS FOR STUDYING HARMONIC OSCILLATIONS Studying the oscillations of a system consisting of a mass hanging by a spring enables to train students in the characteristics of the motion of a harmonic oscillator; consequently they can become experienced with one of the most powerful models for the physical interpretation of a wide range of phenomena. This set of elements can be used to carry out tests on oscillatory motions in real time by the use of a distance sensor. The software enables to defi ne and display physical quantities resulting from measured quantities. Thus it is possible to analyze the trend of quantities that cannot be measured by a sensor, that is the energies associated to the development of phenomena. TRAINING PROGRAM • Hooke’s law • Elastic oscillations • How the oscillation period of an elastic pendulum depends on the mass of system • How the oscillation period of an elastic pendulum depends on the elastic constant of a spring • Studying motion from the point of view of energy • Simple pendulum • How period depends on length • Physical pendulum • Period not depending on oscillating mass • Relationship between the period of a physical pendulum and its moment of inertia • Torsion pendulum • Relationship between the period of a torsion pendulum and its moment of inertia • Relationship between the period of a torsion pendulum and the geometrical and physical quantities characterizing the body in torsion. • Damped oscillations MATERIAL OF THE EQUIPMENT 1 metallic support with rod; 1 complete support for elastic pendulum, for simple pendulum and compound pendulum; 1 elastic pendulum; 4 helical springs with different elastic constants; 2 spheres of different mass; 1 rocker arm with two cylindrical masses; 1 skein of high-resistance thin wire; 1 compund pendulum with two cylindrical masses; 1 torsion pendulum with four metallic wires of different length and section; 1 guidebook to experiments; 1 case STUDY OF COUPLED PENDULUMS Two physical pendulums coupled to each other by a slightly stretched helical spring, can be added to this set of elements; the spring coupling the pendulums enables to transfer energy between the two pendulums. Thus the phenomena of resonance and of beats can be examined. 2 DISTANCE SENSORS 1 FORCE SENSOR.
